MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Classes and campus activities at Alabama State University are canceled Thursday after a “terroristic threat” was directed at the campus, university officials confirmed.
The university said in a statement that campus police and other law enforcement agencies are “actively clearing all buildings on campus.” Students, faculty, and staff who do not live on campus have been asked to leave once their building has been cleared.
Students who live on campus have been directed to shelter in place inside residence halls until further notice.
“Official University business is suspended for the remainder of the day,” the university said. “We appreciate your cooperation as we work closely with law enforcement to ensure the safety of our Hornet family. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”
Just before 1 p.m. Thursday, the university issued an all clear.
Specific details about the nature of the threat have not been released. Anyone with information or concerns is asked to contact ASU campus police at 334-229-4200.
Multiple historically Black colleges and universities in Virginia, Louisiana, Georgia and Florida also reported campus threats Thursday.
Virginia State University has canceled classes for the day, according to our sister station WWBT. NBC affiliate WAVY reported classes and campus activities at Hampton University are canceled Thursday and Friday.
