Anil Ambani's business empire is facing a major shake-up as Indian investigators freeze assets worth a staggering $846 million. This move by India's top financial crimes agency stems from a bank fraud probe, casting a long shadow over the once-thriving business interests of Anil Ambani.
Anil, the younger brother of Mukesh Ambani, Asia's wealthiest individual, has seen his fortunes decline significantly over the past two decades. His business ventures span various sectors, including power and defense.
But here's where it gets controversial... Recent months have brought increased scrutiny from law enforcement, with investigators looking into alleged offenses such as the diversion of bank loans and money laundering.
On Monday evening, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) announced the freezing of assets valued at over Rs75 billion, including office spaces, residential properties, and more than 132 acres (53 hectares) of land. The ED stated that it had uncovered the fraudulent diversion of public funds by various Reliance Anil Ambani group companies. The agency is committed to returning the proceeds of these crimes to their rightful owners.
The ED's investigation was initiated based on a criminal case filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in August.
Reliance Infrastructure, a company controlled by Anil Ambani, stated that the ED's asset seizure would not affect its business operations.
The CBI case originated from a fraud complaint filed by the State Bank of India, the nation's largest lender. The bank alleged a loss of Rs29.29 billion due to the misappropriation of funds by Reliance Communications.
A Reliance spokesperson has stated that Anil Ambani strongly denies all allegations and charges and will defend himself.
And this is the part most people miss... Anil Ambani last made headlines seven years ago when India's opposition leader, Rahul Gandhi, accused him and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of questionable dealings related to the purchase of Rafale jets from France. Both parties denied these allegations. In December 2018, India's Supreme Court dismissed calls for an investigation into the jet deal.
