A shocking incident unfolded at the Hyatt Hotel in Canberra, Australia, during a major defence conference, leaving attendees in a state of panic and raising concerns about security.
The day began with a rock smashing through a window, causing some delegates to fear gunshots. This was followed by a reported discovery of a suspicious package, leading to the evacuation of several hundred attendees from the ballroom.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Keynote speaker and Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy was addressing the conference when the evacuation took place. The timing of these events has sparked speculation and raised questions about potential links to a planned protest outside the hotel.
Organisers of the protest, Students and Staff Against War (SSAW) and the Independent and Peaceful Australia Network (IPAN), had called for sanctions on Israel and an end to restrictions on Palestine protests. They also demanded the government cut ties with organisations allegedly complicit in genocide, specifically naming Canberra-based defence companies EOS and Northrop Grumman.
The ADM Congress, sponsored by Electro Optic Systems, an arms exporter to Israel, featured speakers from these very companies.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, when asked about the protest, urged people to "turn down the temperature" and warned that lawbreakers would face the full force of the law.
As the AFP bomb squad responded to the incident, over 10 police vehicles were deployed, and an investigation was launched.
The conference, a pivotal event in the Australian defence calendar, continued despite the disruptions.
A spokesperson for Minister Conroy emphasised the importance of non-violent protests, stating, "Protests are part of democracy, but they should always be conducted peacefully."
The question remains: Were these incidents isolated, or part of a larger protest strategy? And what does this mean for the future of peaceful demonstrations and their impact on critical events like defence conferences?
