Imagine waking up on what was supposed to be the vacation of a lifetime, only to find yourself covered in painful, itchy bites. This is the nightmare two passengers claim they endured on a Carnival Cruise Line voyage, alleging they were bitten by bed bugs more than 30 times during their trip. But here's where it gets controversial: despite the cruise line's high sanitation scores, the couple insists the ordeal could have been avoided if staff had followed proper inspection protocols. Catherine Shockley and William Maycock had high hopes when they boarded the Horizon cruise ship in February 2025. However, their dream vacation took a horrifying turn just one day into the journey. On February 17, they woke up to discover their bodies covered in what they initially thought were mysterious insect bites. According to their lawsuit, filed in the US Southern District of Florida, they felt an uncomfortable itchiness on their legs and arms, resembling bite marks. Uncertain of the cause, they decided to stay another night in their cabin, hoping the issue would resolve itself.
The next morning, the situation had worsened. The red markings had spread from their heads to their buttocks, prompting Shockley to investigate. And this is the part most people miss: she discovered live bed bugs in various life stages, along with fecal matter and eggs in their stateroom. This confirmed their worst fears—the bites were from bed bugs. The couple immediately reported the infestation to their stateroom attendant and guest services, expecting swift action.
According to Carnival's own website, stateroom attendants are trained to recognize bed bugs and are required to inspect each cabin weekly. If signs of infestation are found, the affected room and surrounding cabins are chemically treated. However, Shockley and Maycock claim that despite their report, no action was taken by the cabin attendants, stewards, or housekeepers. By the end of their trip, they had sustained over 30 bites, resulting in painful welts, dark splotches, sleep loss, mental distress, and even economic losses due to damaged personal property.
The couple is now suing Carnival Cruise Line on three counts of negligence, arguing that the entire ordeal could have been prevented if staff had followed the required inspection and maintenance procedures. Interestingly, the Horizon ship scored an impressive 93 out of 100 during a CDC Vessel Sanitation Program inspection just days after the incident. In fact, the ship has consistently scored 91 or higher since 2018. But here’s the twist: the CDC emphasizes that even the cleanest places aren’t immune to bed bugs. They can be found in five-star hotels and resorts, challenging the assumption that cleanliness guarantees a pest-free environment.
