A routine surgery has turned into a devastating ordeal for Gemma Numan, wife of music icon Gary Numan, leaving her with paralysis in her left arm. This shocking development comes just months after the couple endured the profound grief of losing Gary's brother.
Gemma, 57, bravely shared this difficult health update on Instagram, accompanied by a touching photo of herself and Gary, 67, enjoying a stroll in Kew Gardens. She revealed that the paralysis in her left arm is a "sadder outcome" following a "multi-level discectomy" performed late last year. While paralysis is a rare complication, it's a known risk due to the delicate nature of the surgery and its proximity to the spinal cord and nerve roots.
But here's where it gets particularly heartbreaking: the paralysis struck immediately after the operation on her cervical spine on December 11th. Gemma expressed her shock, stating, "Paralysed left arm straight away! It's one of the sad things that can happen." This is especially poignant because Gemma is left-handed. She shared a tearful experience trying to use a small travel paint kit she'd bought to lift her spirits, only to realize she couldn't hold the brush with her dominant hand. "Get back, cried and realized I can't use it cos I'm left handed,' she wrote. 'So I tried by turning the paper round all the time! It's s*** but that's with my lead hand which is now not really working with any control."
The road to recovery has been long and arduous for Gemma, preventing her from returning home to California. "Still recovering the sadder outcome of left arm paralysis after my multi level discectomy! Gutted! I’ve not been home since the 9 the sep! I miss my animals so much it makes feel sick! I’ve seen my babies! Gary has looked after me here in the UK the whole time ! And I face time babies! But animals are just missed," she confided. She also expressed gratitude to friends looking after her pets, emphasizing the deep bond she shares with them. Adding to the immense challenges, Gemma shared that she still faces another operation, her third since August.

In addition to Gemma's health crisis, Gary was left utterly devastated by the sudden death of his younger brother, John, who was just 60 years old. Gary received the news while on stage during his tour last November. John had spent the evening catching up with Gary before collapsing in the early hours of the morning and passing away in hospital.
Gary, 67, confessed that he considered canceling the rest of his shows after breaking down on stage in Birmingham, UK, shortly after learning of his brother's passing. However, he has since decided to continue the tour, a decision influenced by his father and John's wife, who believed John would have wanted him to perform. In a deeply personal Instagram post, Gary described the preceding days as "the hardest of my life." He recounted their last moments together, a poignant farewell outside their tour bus, and the haunting realization that John never made it to his car, his life tragically cut short by a heart condition.
