The Giant Rat Revolution: A Tale of Art, Music, and Community
In the heart of Hull, a unique and controversial art project has taken the city by storm, quite literally. Imagine a garden ornament, but on a grand scale - we're talking about giant rat sculptures that have become the talk of the town.
But here's where it gets interesting: these rats aren't just any ordinary garden decor. They're a tribute to a local legend, Mick Ronson, a rock musician who started his journey with The Rats before becoming David Bowie's guitarist. And this is the part most people miss - it's not just about the art, it's a celebration of local heritage and talent.
A Mischief of Rats, as the project is aptly named, featured 45 towering statues, each standing at an impressive 6 feet tall. These colorful creations were displayed across Hull during the summer, creating a unique walking trail that captivated locals and visitors alike.
The auction of these rats in September sparked a frenzy, with proceeds amounting to a whopping £160,000. All funds went to the Daisy Appeal, supporting Cottingham's Castle Hill hospital. It's a beautiful example of art for a cause, don't you think?
Now, meet some of the proud owners of these giant rats. Jon Seth, for instance, had his heart set on a particular rat named Ronno. His family, including his wife and son, were fans of previous art trails in Hull, and when they heard about the rat trail, they jumped at the chance to sponsor one. And when given the opportunity to purchase Ronno, they couldn't resist.
"He's become a real conversation starter in our garden in Little Weighton," Seth shared. "Our neighbor thinks we're mad, but we love having him. He adds a unique charm to our space, and we found the perfect spot for him to stand proudly."
Another rat, Blossom Whiskers, has found a home at Mires Beck Nursery, a special educational needs and disabilities facility. Ian Ridpath, the service delivery manager, couldn't be happier with the addition. "The sculpture reflects the vibrant colors of our spring and summer, and it brings a sense of joy to everyone here - from our service users to our staff."
