Hawaii is taking a significant step towards improving road safety with the introduction of an innovative app designed to reward prudent drivers. The new initiative, called the Safe Roads Challenge app, aims to encourage individuals to make safer decisions while driving, a necessity underscored by alarming statistics showing that 2025 witnessed 129 fatalities on the islands' roads—the highest toll in nearly twenty years, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
"Initial reports indicate that 90% of these tragic incidents are linked to driver behavior, so our efforts are focused on influencing how people drive," explained Shelly Kunishige from the Hawaii DOT. This insight highlights the critical role personal choices play in road safety.
The Safe Roads Challenge app is a user-friendly, free tool that utilizes GPS technology to track drivers' journeys and assigns scores based on their driving performance. "Many drivers believe they are skilled behind the wheel. However, the Safe Roads Challenge app provides data-driven insights that reveal whether there's room for improvement," said Kunishige. The app evaluates various aspects of driving, including acceleration, braking habits, cornering maneuvers, swerving, phone usage during driving, and adherence to speed limits.
For those who download the app and achieve a score of at least 80 points, there’s an added incentive: the chance to win monthly gift cards worth $25. Moreover, participants will be entered into a grand prize drawing at the year's end. "We hope this initiative serves as both a financial motivator and a catalyst for individuals wanting to take action against traffic-related fatalities," Kunishige remarked.
The Department of Transportation encourages users to engage their friends and family by inviting them to join the app under the “Friends” feature, fostering friendly competition. "Our team has already signed up and started comparing scores, which sparks conversations about safe driving—a dialogue we hope many will join," Kunishige added.
Importantly, the app prioritizes user privacy by assuring that it does not share or sell personal information, location data, or individual performance details with any third parties, including insurance providers. The first challenge is set to kick off on January 1, marking an exciting opportunity for Hawaii’s drivers to contribute to a safer community.
