Hello Era! With Metroid Prime 4 Beyond coming next year I realized that it's a series that I know but that I don't have played much. Which is strange because I love sci-fi and games set in space or with aliens, and I only had Nintendo consoles when I was a kid (and I have bought or had every Nintendo console in general).
But for some reason I never played a Metroid game with the exception of Fusion. But it was more an accident than a real will to play Metroid (I didn't even know what Metroid was or that it was even a known series at the time).
So, anyway, the new game coming kinda make me want to play and discover Metroid, but I don't really know where to start, so I'd like your advice, please! With the informations I know, I have some ideas/leads, but I would like to hear your opinion.
I should say that I currently own a Switch, Metroid Prime Remaster and Dread (yeah, I'm one of those crazy person who buy games and don't play them… I have a huge backlog, okay?!) and I'm subbed to NSO. I also have a DS and a 3DS. Here's what I think are my possible starting point:
Metroid / Extra 2 / Zero Mission
If I have to start somewhere, why not at the beginning? Seems logic! Except I quickly tried the first Metroid on NSO and it's so old and hard. For me it's like the first Zelda: if you never played it at it's time of release, it's kinda hard to get into it… but, there is the Extra 2 version of Metroid on NSO, where you start the game with all the upgrades unlocked. This would make things a little easier. But at the same time, if I don't have to search for the upgrades, maybe it's not really playing the game. Lastly, there is also Zero Mission on GBA NSO, which is, if I understand correctly, a remaster/remake of the first game. It could be a great way to play the first game modernized.
Metroid Prime Remastered
This is maybe the most obvious starting point. The first game of a sub-series who is not (I think?) connected to the 2D games story wise, a great remaster almost described as a remake, and a very beloved game. So, it's maybe the one I'm the most tempted to start with. My only concern is that Prime 2 and 3, while often rumored, are not available. And I'm worried that maybe it will be strange to pass from the first episode to the fourth. But maybe it's not that important?
Metroid Dread
I just put this one on the list just because, well, it's the last « new » Metroid released. I don't know anything about it, if it's the sequel of a game or a stand alone story. I played it a little until I met the immortal robot who stalk you. And I hate this kind of mechanic / enemies in game in general, but I think it's even worse in 2D where you don't have a lot of space to get around. But maybe it's a great starting point and it's worth it that I try again, you tell me!
Metroid Prime 4 Beyond
The lazy choice. Just ignore everything and start with the last game. I put this option more to have a way out if my motivation disappears. So I could tell it was a « choice » to start with this one. But seriously, without knowing much about Metroid, it doesn't seem like a great starting point. But at the same time, we don't really know much about the game, so who knows?
List done! Those are the games I think could be great to start Metroid. Tell me what do you think! And don't hesitate to tell me if I have maybe forgotten a better option. Or if I should play multiple games, like the best episodes.
