Facing the ultimate test: Can Tee Kai Wun and Man Wei Chong make it to the World Tour Finals, or will injury steal their shot at glory?
Datuk Razif Sidek, a seasoned voice in the world of badminton, is urging national men’s doubles player Tee Kai Wun to tread carefully as he gears up for his potential debut at the World Tour Finals alongside partner Man Wei Chong. The Finals, scheduled for December 17-21 in Hangzhou, China, are within reach, but Razif's primary concern is Kai Wun's calf injury.
Currently ranked fifth in the world, the dynamic duo is third in the Road to Hangzhou standings, boasting an impressive 84,350 points. This puts them in a prime position to join fellow countrymen Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik at the Finals. However, Kai Wun's injury, sustained during training last month, has cast a shadow over their prospects, forcing them to withdraw from both the Arctic and Denmark Opens.
Despite this setback, Wei Chong and Kai Wun have shown remarkable resilience. They reached the quarter-finals of the French Open and the semi-finals of the Hylo Open last month, demonstrating their competitive spirit. But here's where it gets controversial... Razif is now advising Kai Wun to carefully weigh the risks of competing in the Finals, given his injury. He doesn't want to see them reach the pinnacle of the competition only to be sidelined.
"Sometimes, it feels unfair, but the competition is tougher and the prize money is higher, so it really depends on the players," Razif explained, highlighting the tough choices athletes face. "This is a golden opportunity for them to earn money."
In a recent match, Wei Chong and Kai Wun faced a tough defeat, losing to Japan’s world No. 29 pair, Hiroki Midorikawa and Kyohei Yamashita, with a score of 19-21, 18-21 in the first round of the Japan Masters. They're now focused on securing their spot at the Australian Open next week.
Razif emphasized that the decision rests with the players, stating, "It is not my place to ask them to continue or give up their fight. They have to ask themselves how far they can go, but I want Kai Wun especially to be cautious."
And this is the part most people miss... Razif also praised the pair's determination, acknowledging their strong fighting spirit and desire to qualify. He hopes they can compete at their best without any setbacks.
