Summary
- A director's cut of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora may be on the way.
- This comprehensive edition of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora may coincide with the release of the film Avatar: Fire and Ash later this year.
- While reviews for the game have been mixed, the Avatar title has sold well.
According to a new rumor, 2023’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora could be getting a director’s cut. Developed by Star Wars Outlaws studio Massive Entertainment, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is an open-world, first-person action game set around the same time as Avatar: The Way of Water. Players take control of a customizable Na'vi who is one of the only surviving members of the lost Sarentu tribe. At the start of the game, they escape from the RDA and embark on a mission to rediscover their heritage and prevent the human army from stealing Pandora’s resources.
Despite earning mixed reviews when it launched in the winter of 2023, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora generated decent sales, even being named one of the Xbox Store’s top 20 games of 2024. Two story-based DLC packs were released last year, titled “The Sky Breaker” and “Secrets of the Spires.” The former saw the Na’vi protagonist investigate a new threat above the treetops of Pandora during an ancient festival called the Great Games, while the latter took players to a new region called the Spires of the Clouded Forest.

With Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Out of the Way, It’s Time for One Far Cry Spin-Off to Get a Second Chance
Massive Entertainment's Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora all but paved the way for the return of one highly underrated Far Cry spin-off.
Earlier this week, Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson reported a rumor that Ubisoft is releasing a “director’s cut” of one of its recent triple-A titles (via Comicbook.com), and a pair of Twitter users quickly guessed that it would be Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. Henderson seemed to agree that this is the case, and this hypothetical director’s cut could coincide with the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash later this year.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Director’s Cut Could Come at the Same Time as the New Movie
Henderson didn’t share any further details about this director’s cut and how it would be different from the multiple versions of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora already available, but it would likely include new graphical and technical improvements alongside all the DLC released for the game so far. It’s also possible for the Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora director’s cut to include brand-new content, but this is all just rumor and speculation at this point.
Releasing a new version of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora around the time that Fire and Ash hits theaters on December 19 would also be a good way for Ubisoft to capitalize on the new Avatar movie and boost sales for its tie-in game by drawing in new fans of James Cameron’s mega-hit sci-fi franchise. In the meantime, Massive Entertainment continues to release new updates for the current iteration of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora to refine the game and address the different technical issues players have stumbled across while exploring and defending the tropical Na’vi homeworld.
