Sony Pictures Animation has set its next original movie, 'Buds', for a Christmas 2027 release. The studio's decision comes on the heels of the strong opening for its recent film, 'Goat', which outperformed expectations. With a 4-day opening of $35.1M, 'Goat' just fell short of Warner Bros.' R-rated female event movie, 'Wuthering Heights', which brought in $37.5M. However, 'Goat' surpassed 'Wuthering Heights' on Sunday and Monday, and is now on track to potentially win its second weekend against the opening of 'I Can Only Imagine 2'.
'Buds' was previously scheduled for a March 2027 release, but the studio has now shifted its release date to December 22, 2027, the same day as a Universal event title. This move puts 'Buds' in direct competition with Disney/Marvel Studios' 'Avengers: Secret Wars' and New Line's 'Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum', both of which are set to open on December 17. While Sony Pictures Animation has not revealed many details about 'Buds', it is known to be an original comedy. The studio's decision to release 'Buds' on Christmas Day suggests that it is aiming for a broad audience and a strong holiday season performance. However, this move could also spark controversy, as it puts 'Buds' in direct competition with two major blockbusters. What do you think?
