In a historic moment for women's cricket, England's Sophie Ecclestone etched her name into the record books at Lord's, becoming the top wicket-taker across all formats for her country. The occasion marked the first women's Test match at Lord's, and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) took the opportunity to honor the former players who competed in the amateur era, when women were not even allowed to be members of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). Among the attendees were legends like Enid Bakewell, one of Wisden's all-time greatest women's cricketers, and World Cup-winning bowler Anya Shrubsole.
"This morning was incredibly wholesome," reflected Alex Hartley, a World Cup winner herself. "Seeing all the past players, it was a beautiful day, and it's fantastic that the ECB recognized those who made it possible for us to be here."
And it was fitting that Ecclestone, the teenage prodigy turned attack leader, stole the headlines. At just 27 years old, she has already achieved so much, and her left-arm spin has become a trademark. Alongside India's Deepti Sharma, also 28, they are in a tight race to become the first women to reach 400 international wickets across formats.
"It's an incredible feeling, and I never imagined this would happen," Ecclestone said. "Walking out of the Long Room with the ex-players there, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
For seamer Issy Wong, who didn't feature in England's World Cup run, the standalone Test match held a special significance. She felt it gave her an opportunity to focus on her skills with the red ball and pay homage to the pioneers of the game.
"It was an emotional day, having all the ex-players there during the anthems," Wong recalled. "We owe it to them for creating these special moments for us."
Despite the rarity of women's Tests, Wong's dedication to the format was evident. She didn't even have her Test cap with her, and her father had to bring it to her at the last minute. This passion for the longest format was a testament to the legacy they were building for future generations.
"The joy these players have for Test cricket is infectious, and it's a gift to those who came before them," added Hartley. "It's a new era for women's cricket, and we're honored to be a part of it."
